A Houston Home Care Story

...And They Lived Happily Ever After

Norman caught his first glimpse of Martha in a Quantum Mechanics course. He was seated across from her when he happened to notice how the sunshine danced on her auburn hair as if God was saying "That's the one".

Norman and Martha married in 1945 and celebrated their 66 years of marriage at home in Houston. Ninety-four year old Norman and ninety-one year old Martha were able to live in their own home with the assistance of a Professional Geriatric Care Manager and private duty in-home caregivers.

In the beginning the couple only needed "a little help". Martha's condition deteriorated when a stroke compromised her ability to communicate and care for her personal needs. Norman was eventually diagnosed with Parkinson's and he too needed more home care. Their three children who were long distance caregivers decided to hire additional assistance as their parents needs increased.

A Professional Geriatric Care Manager was hired to coordinate physician appointments, work with the private caregivers in the home and provide stimulating activities for the couple. This proved successful as Norman and Martha enjoyed outings to concerts, church and social events. Chris Hicks, their Care Manager knew Martha was an avid "weaver" and accompanied Martha to her weekly weaving meetings. Norman loved to swim so Chris coordinated swimming activities with an aquatic therapist at a local fitness center.

Eventually our private duty home care agency was engaged to provide 24 hour care for medication administration and total personal care. With the help of compassionate caregivers, nursing and the Professional Geriatric Care Manager the couple remained in their home until March 2011.

On March 30, 2011 a beautiful motor coach pulled up to Norman and Martha's home. The coach was equipped with a nurse, two drivers, two beds, two recliners and all the luxuries of home. This was their transport to a new home so they would be near their children as the end of life approaches. As a testament to the power of in home care the children sent this note of praise to our team.

"The experience (moving closer to family) makes me appreciate just how much work went into keeping them in their house for as long as you did. I know they both would prefer to still be in the house, if only we could magically whisk it and the caregivers up from Houston so they could be close to family. Thanks to you for all your care!"

A discussion about advance care planning for our aging and disabled loved ones can start around the kitchen table. Topics may include additional help coming into the home, the need for Powers of Attorney for Healthcare and Finances, and what happens when seniors can no longer remain at home. When in-home care is needed it is best to interview several licensed home care agencies to ensure the agency performs background checks, is insured and competency evaluates their caregivers annually.

I encourage adult children and caregivers to start discussing these issues early before a crisis happens. A Professional Geriatric Care Manager can help clients navigate the maze of care options and facilitate decision making. Decisions made under stress may not produce the positive results we want for our families. Martha and Norman participated in their care planning with their caregiver which made all the difference in their happy ending.
